Dance delivers… and Plymouth Dance:
- joins up the existing dots to celebrate the variety of dance in the city
- enables people to find out about dance in a way that makes sense to them
- creates and extends city-wide opportunities, using dance as a vehicle for change
Plymouth Dance was established in 2007, following on from a consultancy by Mary Schwarz and Sue Kay commissioned by Arts Council England, Plymouth City Council and Dance South West (2006). The first Director was Mary Brady, who created the strategic framework for the current post.
Plymouth has a vibrant dance ecology, encompassing Plymouth Theatre Royal, The Pavilions and TR2, the Barbican Theatre, Plymouth University, the new Life Centre and Attik Dance, as well as dance schools and youth groups and an active range of artists and practitioners.
Vision:
- contribute to and benefit from the development of a broad-based 21st century dance ecology in Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall
- ensure that dance plays a full part in the economic, social, educational and cultural development of the city
- establish itself as a regional, national and international locus for choreographic and production practice across the dance spectrum
- enable the current key developers to work strategically and effectively together
