On July 8th Dance exploded all over Plymouth as more than 7000 people participated in a Let’s Dance with Change4life mass participation event. At 9.30am Heart FM, one of the project partners, played the Michael Jackson track ‘Black and White’ as the signal to get Plymouth dancing, all at the same time and all over the city.
In the build up to 8 July and under the Change4Life banner, Plymouth Dance ran workshops to teach the specially choreographed dance to children and teachers in participating primary schools. The workshops were also used to promote Change4Life, enthuse young people to join in and encourage parents to do so too. A special Let’s Dance with Change4Life branded DVD was produced as a teaching tool. More than 40 primary schools participated and around 60 groups (including old people groups) took part. In addition, medical and dentistry students at Plymouth University took part in the simultaneous dance on the university campus.
The project has cemented positive links between dance practitioners and individual schools with INSET days now happening for teachers to learn how to teach dance and use it as a vehicle for increasing physical activity and promoting Change4Life.
Look out for the Bridgwater event which will take place on 16 October. For further information please contact sue@citruscreative.co.uk Tel: 0796 206 3883 or louise.portlock@dancesouthwest.org.uk Tel: 0787 677 377
