The final session of the DanSCe Dialogues professional training will take place in Caen (Normandy) between 9th and 10th March. This training led and devised by La Belle Ouvrage, the artistic and cultural training organisation and consultancy based in Paris, has been created to increase collaboration between France and England specifically in the Channel zone of the Euro region. The training aims to facilitate European collaboration by raising knowledge of the different cultural systems and policies in France and in England and identify the touring networks of contemporary dance from both sides of the Channel.
"Dansce Dialogues has provided me with a deeper insight into the dance sector in France. I now have an idea of the procedures necessary to begin to penetrate this new market. The contact list of key players in the sector was extremely valuable. We will take this opportunity to begin to develop potential projects with partners who we have begun to build a personal relationship with after several meetings and social occasions and will enable more meaningful working partnerships”
Deborah Baddoo, Director of State of Emergency.
The training has been established around 3 sessions of 2 days. During the last 2 days organised in Caen this March, the trainees will put into practice the information learnt from the two previous sessions and work on practical cases involving touring a production and simulating different kind of negotiations.
“I am particularly interested in fostering the relationships that may develop, as I can see many different possibilities for exchange in relation to touring, sharing work, practitioner development and community projects. I believe DanSCe dialogues could be the start of some exciting and ongoing partnerships, strategically and artistically.”
Louise Portlock, Dance & Health Regional Lead.
The 6 French and 6 English trainees were selected back in September after a call to professionals from the dance sector (administrators, company and venue directors, dance agencies...). During the first session which took place at the end of January in Le Havre, the trainees had the opportunity to meet each other for the first time and learn about the French cultural system. The English trainees were invited to visit Le Volcan, the national theatre based in Le Havre designed by the internationally renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer. Then it was the turn of the French trainees to learn about the English cultural system during 2 days. On this occasion, they came to Exeter in February where they have met the team and had a tour of tthe Phoenix Arts Centre.
“Dansce Dialogues has enabled me to gain a clearer picture of the touring and producing infrastructure in France, as well as cultural policies that support the dance artist. This has opened up further reflection on our sector in the Southwest, and allowed me to draw some useful comparisons which have helped me to begin to identify potential areas for partnership and project development that could benefit both regions.”
Saffy Setohy Dance Artist.
The next phase of DanSCe Dialogues is the presentation in April of the work of 3 companies from Normandy: Point Zéro and the artistic directors of the 2 National Choreographic Centres In Caen and Le Havre, Hervé Robbe, Héla Fattoumi and Eric Lamoureux at Pavilion Dance in Bournemouth.
Delphine Caron will also spend four days in residence at the Barbican Theatre in Plymouth, before presenting her work in performance at Pavilion Dance.
The DanSCe Dialogues programme at Pavilion Dance is part of a celebration of international dance:
Saturday 2 April, 3.30pm; 4Sounds: Inspired by trance music and set to a live DJ, leading french Hip-hop dancer and choreographer Delphine Caron displays her amazing skill at paring down Hip-hop to its barest form and essential expressive power. 4Sounds is presented as part of the Bold Moves performance.
Tuesday 5 April Solstice (remix): Eric Lamoureux and Hela Fattoumi’s dramatic duet of love and struggle explores the complex relationship between a man and woman, and delves into their emotional space as they seek each other’s company and their own solitude.
un terrain encore vague: In 1993 Hervé Robbe collaborated with Turner Prize-winning British sculptor Richard Deacon and created the iconic work Factory. They now resume their collaboration. Inspired by a childhood view of an industrial wasteland, a landscape emerges from Richard Deacon’s sculptures and is animated by Hervé Robbe’s sophisticated dancing. These two works are presented as part of French Double Bill.
The artists will also be teaching advanced company dance classes at Pavilion Dance between Sunday 3 April – Tuesday 5th April.
